Tucked away in every corner of The Nook, you will find hand-crafted artistic creations made by more than 35 artisans who are members of this unique Blue Mountains co-operative.
From the main street in Leura in NSW, The Nook has been creating community among artisans, shoppers and tourists, and sharing the beauty of the Blue Mountains for 28 years.
The shop runs as a cooperative; decisions are discussed and made by all members at monthly meetings, responsibilities are shared, and enthusiastic support is given by all when it comes to selling each other’s creations, with income from sales going directly to each artisan.
Every unique item is a representation of the artisans and their passion to share a little of the place they call home.
Hand-crafted woodworks created by Owen using both local and salvaged timbers, and Mel’s Leura Countess Grey and Real Aussie Campfire teas are just a few examples of the hundreds of items for sale which attracts locals and tourists alike, creating the unique community feel at The Nook.
Jennie, who sells cards, illustrations and paintings through The Nook, explains that members rostered on shift always welcome customers with genuine Blue Mountains hospitality. They love giving tourism advice as much as they enjoy sharing their passion for what they’ve made.
Customers also value everything The Nook stands for.
Carol is a regular customer at The Nook, and loves the opportunity to directly support Australian-made products, to speak with the artisans, and to see them receive a fair income for their hard work.
“There is such a variety of gifts you can buy for people. Everything here is unique. I’m quite a fan of the milliner’s hat’s here, I have several of those in my wardrobe.”
For Christine who makes those hats and berets, the personal investment from shoppers like Carol spurs her on in her love for what she does, and enlivens her passion.
“When I see people walking down the street with my hat on, it’s just great, it’s a good feeling.”
Christine is not the only artisan who welcomes inspiration through their interactions with customers over the works they’ve made.
Local author, Andy MacQueen’s passion is to write stories about the unique Blue Mountains landscapes and sells several of his published books through The Nook.
“A customer might come in,” he says, “and ask me something about the Blue Mountains or the history (of it) and that’s an opportunity for me to enjoy a little chat. Who knows what that might lead to in terms of inspiration.”
No two artisans are alike at The Nook, and yet they all agree that without it, their ability to showcase and maintain control over the sale of their beautiful items wouldn’t be possible.
The Nook is the epitome of individuals coming together in their diversity to create a community around a common cause.
